For active autoantibody-positive SLE (and lupus nephritis). Available intravenously and subcutaneously.

How it is used in lupus

An add-on biologic for SLE to reduce activity and flares, and one of the combination-therapy options in lupus nephritis.[1]

Common side effects

Infusion or injection-site reactions and increased infection risk occur; mood changes, including depression, have been reported. Described from background clinical knowledge and the Table 5 monitoring note; reconcile with the product monograph.

Tests and monitoring

Monitor for new or worsening depression or suicidal thoughts.[1]

Before you start

Screen for hepatitis B, tuberculosis, and HIV before starting, as for other immunosuppressive and biologic therapy, and address vaccination beforehand.[1]

Important cautions

Reproductive-safety data are more limited; individualise, with full guidance maintained on the pregnancy record. Avoid live vaccines during treatment.
