Probenecid

Taken as tablets. It lowers uric acid by helping the kidneys remove more of it, so drink plenty of fluid. As with other uric-acid-lowering medicines, you may be given a medicine to prevent flares when you start.
- Gout (urate lowering): Started low and built up.
Tests while you take it
Blood tests for uric acid guide the dose. Drink plenty of water, especially at first, to reduce the chance of kidney stones.
What to know
How it is used in gout
Probenecid is used less often than allopurinol. It may be an option if a xanthine-oxidase medicine is not suitable, but it is generally not the first choice if you have reduced kidney function.
Monitoring
Your uric acid is checked to guide the dose. Routine urine tests before starting are generally not needed.
Common effects
Common effects can include stomach upset and rash. As with other uric-acid-lowering medicines, attacks can happen more when starting.
Important cautions
Probenecid works less well if your kidneys are not working normally, and it can interact with several other medicines, so tell your team what else you take.
What to watch for
- A rash or feeling unwell after starting.
- Kidney stone symptoms such as severe flank pain or blood in the urine.
- More frequent attacks in the first weeks, which is expected while levels settle.
