De Quervain's tenosynovitis

Painful, swollen tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. Injection often helps.

What it is

De Quervain's is irritation of the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist, where they run through a tight tunnel. It causes pain when you use the thumb and wrist, and is common in new parents from lifting a baby.

Common symptoms

  • Pain on the thumb side of the wrist, worse with gripping or lifting
  • Pain when turning the wrist or making a fist with the thumb tucked in
  • Swelling or a tender spot at the wrist
  • A catching feeling with thumb movement

What can help

  • A thumb-and-wrist splint to rest the tendons
  • Adjusting how you lift and hold things
  • Topical or simple anti-inflammatories
  • Hand therapy

Where an injection fits

A corticosteroid injection into the tendon tunnel is an effective first treatment and settles symptoms for most people, sometimes needing a second injection. A splint is often used alongside it. If symptoms persist, a minor surgical release is an option.

Home exercise program after your injection

!When to seek urgent care. See a doctor promptly if you notice spreading redness, heat, or fever; numbness or weakness in the hand; severe pain after an injury.
